"Cave Veternica" exhibition

08/12/2011

On Friday, December 9, 2011, at 6 pm, the opening of the “Cave Veternica” exhibition will take place in the exhibition area of the old Hušnjakovo Museum. The exhibition on this cave complex, consisting of numerous branches and situated on the southwest slopes of Medvednica mountain, was organised in cooperation with the Public institution "Nature Park Medvednica", the Institute for Quaternary Geology and Palaeontology of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Mineralogy and Petrography Department of the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb. The exhibition’s authors are the museum advisor, Vlasta Krklec M.Sc., and custodian and geologist Eduard Vasiljević.

The exhibition briefly represents the rich paleontological, geological and archaeological material. The interesting remains of Stone Age culture place Veternica cave right next to the most famous sites of this kind in Croatia and this part of Europe. Geological characteristics of this "underground beauty from Medvednica" will be shown in a film and extraordinary photographs, as well as through actual minerals, while the original fossil animal bones and artefacts from prehistoric – Neanderthal - hunters will tell a story about the traces of life in this cave.

Along with the permanent exhibition of the Krapina Neanderthal Museum and Hušnjakovo finding site, the visitors will have a chance to see another significant Palaeolithic finding site and discover the secret life of Neanderthals, such as the cult of the cave bear, associated precisely with the Veternica cave. A bilingual catalogue accompanies the exhibition, while illustrated educational worksheets were prepared for children to help them navigate through the exhibition. The unique atmosphere of the prehistoric era will be demonstrated by the stone tools workshops. In the time of the exhibition, the Museum will also organise interesting lectures by experts.
